Pre-move Survey

Once you've received your removal quotes from Compare My Move's verified removal partners, they should offer you a free pre-move survey at your home. This will allow them to confirm the quotation, discuss any special requirement you have and check the access and parking arrangements for their vehicle.

Removal companies provide quotes based on the cubic footage of items that need moving. Although this amount varies between companies, you can expect to pay around £0.75-£1 per cubic foot. However this may be more expensive if you are looking for removals in London or any other densely populated city. This free survey will be what helps determine the price.

As with all house removals, your moving company will provide a free home survey to work out the volume of your belongings that will need moving. The overall volume of your belongings determines the size of vehicle required, the time it will take for staff to pack and load, and the packing materials needed.

How are Removal Costs Based on Distance Travelled?

A removal company will charge less for relocating in the local area than they would do for moving across the country or overseas. The further distance you move, the more you will pay.

A recent survey of our partner network showed that some UK removal companies charge at an hourly rate, while others break down costs on a mile by mile basis.

One partnered removal company in our network charges £25 per hour of travelling plus £0.50 per mile covered. Another removal company charges £1 for each mile that is covered during your move.

How Much Are Packing and Moving Costs?

The average cost of packing for a 3-bedroom house removal is £250. This includes 30 large packing boxes and the labour for the packing service. The cost of packing and moving house will depend on how many items you're taking with you, so the fewer packing boxes, the cheaper the move.

Most removal companies offer a part or full packing service to help you with the move. The service will include visiting your house before the move and professionally packing your belongings, loading on to the van and unloading at the new house.

How Much Are Furniture Removal Costs?

Many removal companies will offer a service that dismantles and reassembles furniture, too. Typically, the dismantling and reassembling of 3 double beds will cost £125 but the cost will vary depending on the amount of furniture you need to be dismantled and the removal company that you use.

Some items may require extra protection, such as fine art or antiques, or require the use of specialist equipment. The removal company may have to use more packing material or take more time packing and moving high-value or fragile items. The cost of handling these items will be based on the level of protection they need and the cost of hiring specialist equipment. You should let the company know of any special items.

Transporting special care items may require a specialist removal company to ensure nothing is damaged or lost during your move. This will generally cost extra, but will give you peace of mind that your belongings have been safely delivered to your new property.

All of the partnered removal companies in our network are insured with Goods in Transit and Public Liability insurance.

Moving a Piano

Some removal companies will provide a specialist piano removals service to help with trickier items. The average cost of a piano removal service will cost anywhere between £100 and £150. This will cover the labour costs and the service.

Moving a Sofa

It's recommended that you hire a removal company to take care of moving your sofa, otherwise you will find yourself with an awkward job. To help your removal company move a sofa, make sure you've cleared everything from and around your sofa.

Moving a Fridge

Unless you're leaving your white goods in your house, you will need your removal company to move your fridge. Moving a fridge is a complicated job that should be left to the professionals. Your fridge must be defrosted, cleared and dry before the removal company arrives.

How Much Does a Moving Van Cost?

If you're considering carrying out your house move without the help of a removal company, we've worked out the average removal van costs. It should be noted that your removal van costs will vary depending on the weight of items you're taking, the size of the van and the distance of the move.

How much is a removal van for a day?

To hire a Ford Transit 350 ELWB Jumbo that holds up to 3500 kg, travelling from Cardiff to Bristol (45 miles) will cost you roughly £124.30 for the day. This price doesn't include the cost of your packing boxes and materials, or for a removal expert to help with your move.

Whilst it may seem like a cheaper option, removal companies are highly experienced, aiming to complete your move as quickly and safely as possible. To keep your moving costs down, book your removal company in early and choose the best day to move house.

Additional Removal Costs

Some removal companies may charge extra if they have difficulty gaining access to your property. This cost varies significantly between removal companies and the specifics of your move. Some removal firms may add extra to their hourly rate while others may add a fixed fee on top of your other moving costs.

Ease of access can relate to several scenarios during your move. If you live in a top floor flat without a lift, your removal company will have extra difficulty loading their vehicle. If you live down a narrow lane or your street has restricted parking, your removal company will assess how close they can get to your property.

Depending on the type of vehicle they are using, it may be difficult to park or manoeuvre down a narrow lane. Your removal company will advise you on ease of access as part of your home survey if you are unsure.

Additional Services

Removal companies offer a range of additional services to help make your moving experience a little easier, but this will increase the cost of the service.

Our recent survey of additional service costs found that prices vary significantly depending on the size of house you are moving from.
